Giving Birth – Preparation Is Critical

Giving birth is one of the most dreaded yet joyful experiences for the mother-to-be as well as the rest of the family. There are some techniques that women can use to prepare their bodies and minds before labor. Using just a few of these simple strategies can help you relax, focus and be physically and mentally ready for the big event.
One of the first things that Moms-to-be can do is to learn about the birth process and the stages that occur pre and post labor. There are a wealth of websites that provide pictures or videos of the birth process along with very detailed descriptions of what is normal and what is of concern. By having a clear understanding of what is possible and normal during labor and delivery you are much less stressed and worried. If possible have Dad watch and learn as well to reduce his stress and worry.
There are a variety of exercises that women can use to help their bodies prepare for the birthing process. Giving birth is stressful on the body; however it is also a very natural process. Kegels are exercises that are designed to strengthen the pelvic floor and assist with the pushing process. To practice your Kegels simply tighten your pelvic muscles as if you were stopping urination, hold for four, then relax. These can be done anywhere and are terrific for overall health of the female reproductive and elimination systems even when not expecting.
Finally talk to your doctor or midwife and ask any questions you may have about the process. Knowing as much as you can in advance of giving birth will only make the experience more positive and help prevent stress and anxiety.
